The Power of Community-Led Protection Reflecting on an inspiring day in the Kalobeyei Settlement two weeks ago, we are reminded that the most sustainable solutions come from within the community itself.
Stop Child Abuse (SCA) was honored to partner with Save the Children Kenya to host a vital child protection awareness session, bringing together dedicated caregivers and parents from across the settlement.
In the heart of Kalobeyei, we gathered not just as facilitators, but as community members, to discuss the safety, rights, and futures of our children.
Why "Refugee-Led" Matters As a refugee-led organization, our approach is deeply rooted in lived experience.
We understand the unique pressures, traumas, and systemic barriers that displaced families face on a daily basis. Because we share this context, we know that institutional safeguarding is only part of the solution; true, lasting protection starts at home.
During the session, our dialogue centered on empowering families through practical, culturally sensitive strategies:
- Positive Parenting: We shared insights on building trust and open communication with children, moving away from punitive measures toward supportive discipline.
- Identifying Vulnerability: We equipped caregivers with the knowledge to identify the early, often subtle, behavioral signs of abuse or emotional distress.
- Navigating Systems: We provided clear, actionable guidance on how to safely and confidentially access local reporting channels and psychosocial support services.
An Unshakable Commitment The energy from the parents was incredible.
The active participation and willingness to embrace new parenting paradigms proved that, even in the toughest and most resource-constrained environments, our community's commitment to our children’s safety remains unshakable.
