A Dual Approach to Advocacy and Relief

There is greater joy in giving than receiving. In marginalized and displacement settings like Kakuma Refugee Camp and Kalobeyei Settlement, child protection cannot exist in a vacuum. When families face severe economic hardship and food insecurity, awareness campaigns alone are not enough to bring about lasting change.

To address both the knowledge gap and our community’s immediate material needs, Stop Child Abuse (SCA) recently conducted an integrated child protection campaign across Villages 1, 2, and 3 in the Kalobeyei Settlement.

Answering the Call: What Can We Show Our Children?

Following a comprehensive one-hour interactive session on child rights, positive parenting, and abuse prevention, caregivers engaged in an honest dialogue with our facilitators.

A recurring, heart-wrenching question asked by parents was: In these extremely challenging times, what can we show our children?

This question gets to the core of humanitarian work in refugee contexts.

When parents are overwhelmed by the daily struggle for basic survival, advising them to foster peaceful, supportive home environments must be accompanied by practical empathy and tangible support.

To answer their call and provide immediate relief, SCA distributed food items, including a kilo of sugar and flour, to the most vulnerable individuals and caregivers in attendance.

Why Tangible Support Strengthens Child Protection

Integrating emergency food assistance into child safeguarding activities is a deliberate, evidence-based strategy:

  • Alleviating Household Tension: Severe economic distress and hunger are primary triggers for household stress, which can inadvertently lead to domestic friction, child neglect, or harsh discipline. Providing direct food relief reduces this immediate pressure.
  • Fostering Family Closeness: By addressing immediate physical needs, parents are better positioned emotionally to focus on building closer, more nurturing relationships with their children.
  • Empowering Women and Caregivers: Strengthening female caregivers and mothers directly fortifies the protective barrier around children, turning household units into safe havens.

Uniting to Create a Safer World

Creating a world where children are free from abuse and harm requires a holistic commitment. Small, meaningful gestures of solidarity restore dignity to parents and demonstrate that their community stands with them.

We encourage all caregivers to continue making meaningful changes at home, and we invite our partners and supporters to join this movement to empower women, support vulnerable families, and build a safer, more resilient community together.
