Child Nutrition: The Bedrock of Survival
Good nutrition is the foundation of a child's ability to survive and thrive. Yet, millions of the most vulnerable children remain trapped in a global nutrition crisis.
Good nutrition is the bedrock of child survival and development. It is the essential fuel that allows a child to grow, learn, and contribute to their world. But today, a harsh reality persists: many children are being denied the nutrients they need to thrive. This crisis falls most heavily on the youngest, the poorest, and those trapped in the chaos of humanitarian emergencies.
At least one in three children under the age of five suffers from malnutrition in its most visible forms: undernutrition or overweight.
Undernutrition manifests in two devastating ways: stunting and wasting. Children affected by stunting are too short for their age, a physical sign of a deeper tragedy their brains may never develop to their full cognitive capacity. This creates a lifelong barrier, hindering their ability to learn as children and earn as adults. Those affected by wasting are dangerously thin for their height, possessing weakened immune systems that leave them vulnerable to disease and death. These children require urgent, life-saving treatment to survive.
Conversely, the rise of overweight heightens a child’s risk of obesity and chronic disease. Beyond the physical toll, it subjects children to behavioral and emotional challenges, including stigmatization and depression.
There is also a less visible form of malnutrition: hidden hunger. This occurs when children are deficient in essential vitamins and micronutrients. Though they may not look thin, their growth is delayed, and their immune systems and brain development remain profoundly impaired.
Today, many nations face a "triple burden" of malnutrition the simultaneous presence of undernutrition, overweight, and hidden hunger. As urbanization, poverty, and climate change collapse a family's access to healthy diets, the global mandate to provide essential nutrition services has never been more urgent.
