Adolescent Development & Participation: Empowering the Next Generation
Investing in the second decade of life. We empower displaced adolescents with the skills, platforms, and confidence they need to become active leaders in their communities.
The second decade of life is a profound time of transformation. During adolescence (ages 10–19), young people begin to interact with the world in new ways learning complex skills, forming powerful peer connections, and searching for their place in society.
Today’s generation of young people is larger than ever before. Yet, for adolescents living in displacement camps and conflict zones, this critical developmental window is under severe threat. Poverty, gender inequality, and systemic discrimination intersect with the traumas of conflict and forced displacement. Far too often, refugee adolescents are ignored by policymakers, excluded from decision-making, or worse, viewed merely as problems or security threats rather than untapped potential.
At Stop Child Abuse (SCA), we know that investing in adolescents is the most effective way to build strong economies, inclusive communities, and vibrant societies. We refuse to let the potential of displaced youth be wasted.
We champion adolescent development and meaningful participation through four strategic pillars:
- 1. Amplifying Youth Voices: Adolescents have a fundamental right to be heard on issues that affect their lives. Through platforms like the Vastare Youth Forum, we provide safe, structured spaces for young people to express their views on child rights, climate change, and peacebuilding, ensuring they are active participants in shaping camp policies and community norms.
- 2. Equipping for the Future: We transition adolescents from vulnerability to self-reliance by providing access to vocational training, digital literacy hubs, and our Girls Who Code initiatives. By equipping them with 21st-century skills, we prepare them to navigate and succeed in a modern, borderless economy.
- 3. Fostering Peace and Social Cohesion: Adolescents are powerful agents of peace. Through our organized sports initiatives such as the SCA Tournament for Peace & Unity we bring together youth from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds to foster mutual respect, teamwork, and intergenerational dialogue.
- 4. Dismantling Gender Barriers: Adolescent girls in humanitarian crises face compounded risks, including early marriage and gender-based violence. Our targeted advocacy and educational campaigns deliberately focus on keeping girls safe, in school, and empowered to demand their equal rights.
